November 14, 2009

Funky at times, lounge/chill at times, but always upbeat and extremely unique, this is one that I would not classify as "Circuit" in the traditional sense. I think you'll do a better job understanding it for yourself, by listening to this player with some of the tracks he likes most right now. I'd be shocked if anyone didn't like it, because there is so much to appreciate on so many levels. Its a cut apart and the influences so evidently varied, its refreshing and innovative, even if at the end of the day I'm going to always be running back to my "anthems." This first track in the player is one of those that every time I've heard it out, has demanded such a HUGE emotional response from the entire venue. Spectacular!
See you at Friction this weekend! The flier is the same as last week, so just scroll down.

"FUCK the BULLSHIT, Where's the Music?" | Volume 1, Issue 5
MUSIC vs. FANFARE? Catch a rising star!
November 7, 2009
This very type of preview was what I had in mind when I started doing these about a month ago. People have been asking my opinion for a couple of weeks already, and it requires a decision between two VERY attractive tickets. And, now that the playing field has leveled with the introduction of after-hours variety, it's that much more difficult of a decision! The easy way out would have been one of those "go here early, go there late" recommendations, that I won't lie - I'm guilty of from time to time. Luckily in this case, I feel like there are at least one or two things that tip the scales...
If you were to scroll to the bottom of this page and read the preface to Issue 1 again you'd recall immediately that when it comes to this site, its going to pretty much always come down to the DJs. I happen to be a big fan of all 4 of the DJs appearing this Saturday as well, so I would tend to them start categorizing out things like price of ticket, frequency of local exposure, and a general level of excitement surrounding the names, within the circuit at-large. Clarity starts to really come in for me, with that measure...
For Saturday November 7th I am greatly excited to recommend the Los Angeles DEBUT of DJ Big Kid (Singapore), at FRICTION from MND Events!
Big Kid is one of
the hottest names on the global circuit this summer and is currently in the midst of his US debut tour! Although his visit to LA is a homecoming of sorts (he attended
musical school here for 4 years), this is his opportunity to show us all what the results sound like. And, I'll tell you this much, I was pleasantly surprised to experience his latest mix-set
(available exclusively here at Circuit Cadence), and if you consider that in just a month there have been literally thousands of downloads, I must not be the only one! The traffic would have crippled
the site if I hadn't just happen to start a premium membership with the file host prior to releasing it!
At the end of the day, Friction is the more economical door price, is now open late for after-hours, and is offering such an exciting artist, that its hands down the right choice for me personally. Although I am a big fan of the DJs at other options, truth be told they are either local or regular visitors, and when married to a higher price and stepped up fanfare, it seems distracting when I just wanna dance! Once you've seen Flava in a fat suit is there really much of a need to see it again? I imagine for some the answer is probably yes, so take it with a grain of salt - if you enjoy theatrics equal to or superior to the music, etc., then your choice may end being a different one. Either way, its going to be an awesome night on Los Angeles dance floors this Saturday! Hopefully I will see you, but either way: DANCE YOUR ASS OFF & HAVE FUN!!!

Is It Me, Or Is BRAZIL Taking Over The World?!
October 24, 2009
So, since I get so frustrated when people pump me full of hot air, either for my feelings, or because they don't know what they're talking about, or whatever the case might be, I find it only fair that I not act like some all-knowing oracle or regurgitate DJ bios under the guise of knowing everything about every one of them. Fuck the bullshit, right?
With that preface, I'll proceed with full disclosure, that I am not a subject matter expert on this week's recommendation, but I'll tell you what I think and what its based on, and of course provide you with music to decide for yourself, and that will be that. I only promote and suggest events and artists I believe in because I'd MUCH rather there be a continued trust in my voice than just spew out blind plugs or become phony/fake. :-)
This week I'm saying the place to be is:
Friction @ MJ's w/ DJ Rafael Calvente (RIO DE JANEIRO - BRAZIL), even though I'm only mildly familiar with his music and have never heard him spin, personally. In that same breath you can probably ascertain where the recommendation is coming from, then - the exact same facts! Truth be told, many a promoter has made grandiose claims/promises to bring rising new talent to the local scene, and always the "new" names are few and far between local resident DJs. So far, Friction has been the only real, and consistent "follow-through" on that pledge, and based on the events themselves and the names slotted for the near future, I trust this will be a welcome opportunity for even myself to broaden my realm of inform.
Of course, no matter how much I might have faith in "the event," I'm a picky and opinionated brat when it comes to dance music, so I did the requisite Facebook & Myspace "homework" on Rafael, and the set included herein casts immediate resemblance to the dominant circuit influence for 2009: Latin America, Latin America, Latin America!! That can only be construed as a good thing in my eyes, since its been the freshest source of innovative and quality contribution to the genre lately. Listen for yourself, what do you think?
[SIDEBAR: Brazil has ethanol cars, the Olympics, an economy poised to surpass Japan's in the coming decade, and one after another of the hot DJs! -- Can anyone else say "GURL, DO YOU SPEAK PORTUGUESE?? I Gotta go see what all this noise is about!"]

Do You Cruise?!
October 17, 2009
It was a hard decision this week, because this is a big weekend for music in LA. The Atlantis Mexican Riviera cruise sets sail on Sunday from Long Beach, meaning there will be lots of hots in town. Hot boys, hot DJs, and a circuit party afloat - for 7 straight days! Now if you're going on the cruise, you might be taking it easy on Saturday night, or you might be anxious to get the party started! For those not going on the cruise, I suspect that getting the party started will be the obvious choice. So, I'll touch briefly on some options for different styles, but since ultimately I have to choose one event to recommend, here it is:
REFLEX @ Ultra Suede with DJ Kidd Madonny (MIAMI)
I'm not going on the cruise, so I have to say "get the party started." This is an after-hours event, so it doesn't even start until 2:30AM and goes until daylight, where it will intersect with the AIDS walk beginning just outside. If that's too late for you, but you're going on the walk, its free to get in after 6AM, so you can stop by before the walk!
As for the music, I've heard Kidd spin just one other time, and I was very unsuspecting of what a great sound he embodies. Its interesting, because I find I have a hard time articulating what it is that is unique about him. I suppose I'd say it is the dichotomy created from his hard pulsing beats, without the mood becoming "dark" per se. I think you can only hear it to totally get what I mean, so I've posted one of his sets down below. All in all, creative style and a relatively "new" name locally, weighed heaviest in picking Kidd.
However, if you're thinking of making it an early night so you can make it up in the morning to get to the boat and/or the AIDS walk, you're still looking at a great night! Drew G (NYC) is also in town, spinning favorite Friction, which goes from 9PM - 3AM (closing time is flexible, this is my realistic estimate), plus you'll get to hear Kidd spin aboard the cruise, so this offers the most varied exposure to DJs.
Joe Gauthreaux also spins Saturday night, at Cherry Boom, although I don't personally view Cherry Boom as a "circuit" event, Joe is undoubtedly a popular circuit favorite. Joe will also be spinning aboard the cruise.
Check out this set from Kidd Madonny to get an idea of what to expect on Saturday!
DJ KIDD MADONNY | STOP MEDDLING
CONFUSED ABOUT WHERE TO GO THIS WEEKEND?
NEVER FEAR, CIRCUIT CADENCE IS HERE!
Never worry about where the best place to dance on a Saturday night in LA is, ever again.
Without question, in the year 2009 no other city rivals Los Angeles' circuit, in terms of the production of, availability of, quality of and frequency of, "the circuit party" as we've know it. When NY was seeing it's mega clubs shut down for any number of reasons, mostly political, and when D.C. was leveling Nation for a new baseball stadium, Los Angeles saw the type of growth that only exists in an atmosphere of competition. That competition is perhaps hotter today than at any other point in the recent resurgence in the party scene locally over the past several years.
There's a few key players that made meaningful changes and steps that led to the current success possible. Some of the obvious would be the now mainstay semi-monthly REFLEX promoters, who are credited with the return of the "after-hours" format. A line down the block beginning to form while the patrons inside hurry to get one last drink during last call, are no longer surprising, but expected. Then there's the promoters of SCANDAL, who've clearly carved their indomitable mark in the landscape by re-introducing party-goers to the "big room" style venue, performance, and production quality expected from the main event portion of big circuit weekends. There's been collaborations between once rivals, rivalries between once collaborators, and a lot of money as new promoters want to get in on it, new DJs want to get bookings, and its quite tinsel-town of the place to finally be resembling it a bit.
But, where does that leave the party-goer? For most, being deluged with fliers every time they walk out of one event, and the more prevalent head to head challenges, its caused confusion, frustration, added expense, Now the excitement and innovation born out of competition and growth has seemed to pique, and as it plateaus its a survival of the fittest mentality for some promoters, some have already called it quits, and still others know that once they've won the circuit community over, they've got a very loyal following in their camp.
So, as you will come to know this portion of the site, every week we will preview the upcoming weekends big musical draw. This is going to almost solely depend on the DJ, and difficult for some to accept possibly, yes - my OPINION will certainly present itself from time to time. If you're familiar with me at all, I don't think you'll question whether or not I can tell it like it is, and have likely seen instances where I've recommended an event I didn't personally prefer, because I thought most people would (eh-hem, Peter what?)
So that said, we're going to start simplifying the musical scene:
Go go boys at an event? "Don't care!"
Drink special? "Blah blah."
Someone I've never met in person, but I think I might have seen his name in my facebook feed, is "hosting" the event? "And?"
Yinon Yahel or Edson Pride spinning the decks? TELL ME MORE!!!
Nothing matters to me but the music, not to insinuate that even the best of us can be sucked into the bullshit that comes along with all the other melodrama, so that's what we'll base our recommendations on. If I'm not personally familiar with a DJ (probably not going to be an issue too often!), I will find a contributor who is. And, if there are non-musical influencing factors that damage the circuit in general or will impact the overall ability to enjoy the music, I'll let that be known. Consider this a consumer reports of sorts, but the best part will be all of the new DJ names I hope you all will be turned onto through this forum.
Questions? Complaints? You know where to get me (facebook of course), or email me direct: john@circuitcadence.com. Enjoy!

DO YOU LIKE IT HARD?!
October 10, 2009
The DJ that will have me sweating within seconds on Saturday, made a long trip to be here (no, not long like West Hollywood to Silver Lake [which is 15 minutes by the way, so get off your lazy asses or shut up about it], and is someone who actually fell off my radar for a couple of years recently, but is one of my all time favorites!
Jack Chang (LONDON) is going to give a set that's rare in LA: DARK, HARD, POWERFUL, PROGRESSIVE, to an extent you typically get from one place only: THE UNDERGROUND! If you think Paulo and Abel are tribal, you need to hear Jack! I came across Jack's music years ago when it would show up in keyword searches in Limewire. Back then the digital song in general wasn't what it is today, so it was very common to come across little else other than some select thunderpuss remixes, and the rest being DJ mix-sets, recorded live at events around the globe. I had downloaded a two part set of Jack's from a Paris event and my perception of the dark tribal sound was changed.
I wouldn't even dare to compare him with anyone else, but you might say Connie Casserole ventures towards the same side of the arena at least. I've come to associate this type of sound with a very primal, very industrial, very Berlin sort of imagery, and listen/download these sets to get an idea of what I mean.
I actually just stumbled across his performance posting and was floored and excited to see his booking. MND Events (yeah, you know those Scandal guys), have been doing Friction for several months now, but its been getting better and better and better. Despite the queens in WeHo complaining about the distance to its weekly host venue (MJ's), it is not at all the ordeal one might make it out to be.
Consider this, a local DJ is spinning, AGAIN, a block from your home, but you've heard him no less than a dozen times this year. Conversely, if you would just allow yourself the fun you deserve of the circuit, a short cab or car gets you a packed venue with a RARE, often times debut, performing - globally recognized talent, and it seems obvious. It does demonstrate who's about the music, the familiar circuit faces that you now know really do love the music will be there as always, the circuit curious - anxious to hear any DJ that's come from so far and is so well reputed by the prior group, and the fun unsuspecting passerby or two who gos to MJ's regularly (who just may find their calling on the circuit from an unsuspecting locale).
This will be Jack's second LA visit in 2009, however prior to that it had been over 2 years.
Check out the flier (above) for details and enjoy these sets (below).

Talk about my task in choosing a destination being made easy for me this week! Not only is
Oren Nizri my personal choice, but he's a well established and reputed name with a following all his own! It had been a while since I'd caught myself up in his style and really submerged myself in it, so this morning as I searched my archives for the tracks currently listed in his top 10, I quickly found myself dancing around the apartment - late to get out the door for the day and ultimately missing my train to San Diego! I just said "Screw it." pressed play again, and went about a new course for the day!

Enjoy!
"FUCK the BULLSHIT, Where's the Music?" | Volume 1, Issue 1
DO YOU LIKE IT HARD?!October 10, 2009
